Several years ago, in a magazine focussing on granny squares, there were directions for crocheting an afghan with squares in several sizes. They used bright crayon-like colours.

Any ideas?

Try some of the yarn brand sights. Many of them have free patterns. Lion Brand Yarn, Berroco, Bernat and Lilly are a few.

It is easier to get the squares to match up if you make the edges multiples of each other.
Or you could knit strips with square/rectangles of different lengths and then join the strips together.
